As a commercial photographer based in Suffolk, I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of various events and causes. But one recent assignment was particularly close to my heart – photographing the Santa Dash in Great Yarmouth for St Elizabeth East Coast Hospice. This event wasn’t just about capturing moments; it was about being a part of a community’s collective effort to support a noble cause during the festive season.
The Brief: A Dash of Festivity for a Good Cause
On the 10th of December, 2023, I joined the bustling crowds at Gorleston promenade to document a unique charity event – the Santa Dash. This Christmas-themed fundraiser was all about community spirit, empathy, unity, and celebration. My goal was to capture the essence of these values through my lens, focusing on the joyous faces of participants, the dedicated volunteers, and the picturesque backdrop of Gorleston seafront.
The Heart of the Event: Candid Shots and Portraits
The Santa Dash saw over 245 enthusiastic supporters don Santa outfits and festive attire for a good cause. From the energetic 5k timed run to the cheerful 2k family fun run, every moment was filled with vibrant energy and a sense of unity. My task was to encapsulate these emotions in photographs, ensuring that each shot reflected the hospice’s ethos and the community’s involvement.
Challenges and Rewards
Photographing an event like the Santa Dash presented unique challenges and rewards. The mix of candid and portrait photography meant I had to be constantly on the move, ready to capture spontaneous moments of joy and structured shots that highlighted the event’s purpose. The challenge was to balance the festive atmosphere with the need for images that could be used year-round, a task that required a keen eye and a deep understanding of the event’s significance.
Impact and Outcome
The Santa Dash was more than just a photography assignment. It was a reminder of the power of community and charity. More than £7,000 was raised for St Elizabeth East Coast Hospice, a testament to the collective effort of all involved. This event not only brought festive cheer to the participants but also made a tangible difference in the lives of those cared for by the hospice.
A Festive Assignment with a Heart
As I reflect on the Santa Dash, I am reminded of the true spirit of Christmas – giving, sharing, and celebrating together. As a commercial photographer in Norfolk, it was an honour to contribute to this heartwarming event, capturing moments that will continue to inspire and remind us of the power of community and charity.
