Creating the perfect album cover is more than just taking a photograph; it’s about capturing the essence of the artist and their music. I recently had the privilege of working with the incredibly talented musician Izzy Kershaw to produce a series of captivating album covers. This project, which involved five distinct photoshoots, was a remarkable journey through creativity, collaboration, and artistic expression. In this blog post, I will take you behind the scenes of these photoshoots, sharing insights into the process, the concepts behind the images, and the collaborative efforts that brought them to life.
The Concept: A Journey Through Alchemy
Izzy Kershaw’s vision for the album covers was inspired by the ancient concept of alchemy and the psychological theories of Carl Jung, particularly surrounding the shadow self. The series of photos is meant to tell a story, illustrating the transformation of the self through the stages of Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas, Rubedo, and finally, Alchemy. Each stage represents a different phase of personal growth and self-realisation, using vivid imagery and symbolic elements to convey these profound themes.
Understanding the Stages of Alchemy
Nigredo: Lamentations
This stage represents blackening, chaos, and the beginning of transformation. The imagery involves Izzy with black face paint, looking weary and dejected, symbolising the initial struggle and confusion.
Albedo: Disputations
This phase signifies whitening, purification, and the emergence of duality. Izzy appears in a white dress, being embraced by Sabrina in a black latex suit, highlighting the contrast and harmony of opposites.
Citrinitas: Affirmations
Representing yellowness, light, and transformation, this stage features Izzy in a golden halo headdress, symbolising enlightenment and spiritual awakening.
Rubedo: Transmutations
This phase signifies redness, success, and mastery. Izzy is depicted in a red dress, leading Sabrina by a collar, symbolising control and dominance over the shadow self.
Alchemy
The final stage represents the integration and mastery of the shadow self. Izzy, crowned and seated, embodies the culmination of the transformative journey.
Planning the Photoshoot: A Collaborative Effort
Planning these photoshoots required meticulous attention to detail and close collaboration with Izzy and the entire team. We began with a thorough review of Izzy’s brief, discussing each stage of the alchemical journey and how we could visually represent these concepts.
Key Considerations for the Photoshoot
- Costume and Makeup: Each stage required specific costumes and makeup to reflect the symbolic elements accurately. For instance, Nigredo involved black face paint, while Albedo featured a white dress and pearl earrings.
- Lighting and Ambience: The lighting had to complement the themes of each stage. Warm lighting was used for Citrinitas to evoke a sense of enlightenment, while darker tones were employed for Nigredo to convey chaos and confusion.
- Posing and Composition: The poses and composition were crucial in conveying the narrative. Each shot was carefully planned to reflect the story behind the stage, such as Izzy’s weary head on Sabrina’s shoulder in Nigredo, and the regal, commanding posture in Alchemy.
The Photoshoot: Bringing the Vision to Life
The photoshoots took place at my studio in Bentwaters, Suffolk. Each session was a blend of creativity, precision, and spontaneity, with the team working seamlessly to capture the perfect shots.
Nigredo: Lamentations
The first shoot focused on Nigredo, capturing the essence of struggle and chaos. Izzy wore black face paint, symbolising the initial stage of transformation. Sabrina, dressed in a black latex suit, carried Izzy, representing the weight of the shadow self. The final decision was to shoot in colour, enhancing the depth of the imagery.
Albedo: Disputations
For Albedo, the theme was purification and duality. Izzy donned a white dress and pearl earrings, while Sabrina’s latex suit had lights on, symbolising illumination. The embrace between Izzy and Sabrina, with Izzy cupping Sabrina’s mask, was shot in colour to highlight the contrast and harmony between the two figures.
Citrinitas: Affirmations
The Citrinitas shoot was vibrant and warm, reflecting the themes of light and transformation. Izzy wore a long dress with a golden halo headdress, an analogue effect that added a unique touch. The session was shot in full colour to capture the vibrancy of the golden hues and the regal pose.
Rubedo: Transmutations
In Rubedo, the theme was mastery and success. Izzy wore a red dress and spiked heels, holding a flogger while leading Sabrina by a collar. This powerful imagery represented the control and dominance over the shadow self. The latex suit with red lights added to the intensity of the scene. This session was also shot in full colour to highlight the richness of the theme.
Alchemy: The Final Stage
The final shoot, Alchemy, was the culmination of the transformative journey. Izzy, dressed in full black tech wear with a plain crown, sat on a couch directly facing the camera. The scene was luxurious, with fabrics adding to the opulence. Sabrina lurked over Izzy’s shoulder, creating an aura of mystery and power. This stage was shot in full colour to capture the depth and richness of the transformation.
Challenges and Solutions
Every photoshoot comes with its challenges, and this project was no exception. One of the main challenges was ensuring that the symbolic elements were effectively communicated through the images. This required constant collaboration and feedback between Izzy and me. We reviewed each shot meticulously, discussing what worked and what needed adjustment.
Another challenge was the lighting. Each stage required different lighting setups to reflect the themes accurately. For example, the warm lighting for Citrinitas needed to be carefully balanced to avoid overpowering the scene. We experimented with various setups until we achieved the desired effect.
The Final Images: A Collaborative Success
The final images were a testament to the collaborative effort and creative synergy between everyone involved. Each photograph captured the essence of Izzy’s vision, telling a story of transformation and self-realisation. The decision to shoot some images in colour, despite the initial brief, was a collaborative decision that enhanced the overall impact of the series.
Highlights of the Final Images
Nigredo:
The colour image of Izzy, weary and dejected, captured the struggle and chaos of the initial stage perfectly.

Albedo:
The embrace between Izzy and Sabrina, with the contrasting light and dark elements, conveyed the theme of duality beautifully.

Citrinitas:
The vibrant, golden hues and the regal pose of Izzy exuded enlightenment and transformation.

Rubedo:
The dynamic, powerful imagery of Izzy in control highlighted the theme of mastery and success.

Alchemy:
The luxurious, opulent setting and the commanding presence of Izzy brought the final stage to life, embodying the culmination of the transformative journey.

Conclusion: Reflecting on the Experience
Working on Izzy Kershaw’s album cover photoshoot was an incredibly rewarding experience. It was a journey through creativity, collaboration, and artistic expression. Seeing the final images and knowing that my work will be part of Izzy’s musical journey is a thrilling and humbling experience. The collaborative effort, from planning to execution, ensured that each photograph told a compelling story, capturing the essence of Izzy’s vision.
Testimonial from Izzy Kershaw
“I had hired Bob Foyers’ services to help me with the photos for my album cover. I decided I wanted four EP covers and a final album cover at the end, so five in total. Bob really took the time to understand my vision and read over the brief and really encouraged me to be bold in my decisions. Before the day of the shoot, he also recommended that he sign an NDA so that he could listen to the entire album to understand where I was coming from. During the shoot, he wasn’t afraid to let me know his professional opinions about how some of the shots were coming through, which made me feel like I could trust him completely. In the end, I have five amazing photos that exceeded my original vision. Bob Foyers is a master photographer, a painter of light, a creative wizard, and a true professional. I am over the moon with the results.”
