Jewellery is one of the most rewarding but also one of the most technically demanding subjects to photograph. The reflective surfaces, fine textures, and small scale of each piece mean that lighting and composition must be handled with precision. At the same time, the photographs need to reflect the maker’s story and the values behind the brand.
I recently had the pleasure of photographing a new collection for Ruth, the owner and maker of Bluebell Lane Jewellery. Her work is not only beautifully designed but also deeply tied to sustainability, craftsmanship, and personal meaning. This shoot took place at my studio, where Ruth joined me to ensure the creative direction matched her vision. What we created together was a versatile set of images that balance clarity with storytelling, essential for both e-commerce and brand marketing.
About Bluebell Lane Jewellery
Bluebell Lane Jewellery is built on simple but powerful principles: sustainability, craftsmanship, and meaning.
- 100% Recycled Sterling Silver – Every piece is crafted from recycled silver. Even chains and findings, such as butterfly backs, are sourced in recycled silver.
- Waste-Free Workshop – Any off-cuts or scraps are melted down and reused, ensuring nothing is thrown away.
- Eco-Friendly Packaging – Every item is shipped in compostable packaging, including the ink used on postcards.
- Supporting Nature – For every order placed, £1 is donated to The Woodland Trust, helping to protect woodlands, trees, and wildlife.
These values influence not just the jewellery itself, but also how it is presented visually. That was central to this photoshoot.
Working Together in the Studio
For projects like this, I always recommend that clients attend the shoot. Having Ruth in the studio made the process collaborative and fluid. We were able to review images live on screen as I shot, making adjustments to compositions and styling in real time.
Ruth brought her creative energy and clear ideas of how she wanted the jewellery to be represented. My role was to use technical expertise in lighting, composition, and styling to bring those ideas to life. This combination always produces stronger results because it merges the maker’s vision with photographic skill.
Her words afterwards sum up the process perfectly:
“I had such a great morning photographing some of my jewellery with Bob. His set up meant it was easy to look through the pictures as we went, and adapt any of the compositions without any hassle. He was easy to talk to and get my vision across too, welcoming all ideas as we worked through the shots. I was also amazed at how quickly he sent over the final images, which are all beautiful! Thank you!”
The Jewellery Collection
Hammered Square Statement Ring
One of the boldest pieces in the collection, the hammered square ring immediately draws attention. The dimpled surface catches the light from every angle, giving it a striking reflective quality. For this piece, I chose a simple studio set-up with a neutral background and soft fabric to let the hammered texture speak for itself.
Commercially, this is a “hero image.” It communicates the product clearly, perfect for e-commerce, catalogue pages, or as the leading shot in a marketing campaign.

Dappled Rings
The Dappled Rings are inspired by the shifting light on the woodland floor, something Ruth noticed during her walks with her daughter. Each ring is unique, shaped by intuition rather than rigid patterns.
To capture this story visually, I styled the rings on bark, surrounded by rose petals. The setting communicates romance, nature, and timelessness. A single ring shot gives clarity, while a paired composition suggests togetherness and love. These images are well-suited for social campaigns, Valentine’s promotions, or wedding-focused content.

Dappled and Abstract Stud Earrings
Both earring styles share roots in Ruth’s creativity. The dappled studs mirror the woodland-inspired rings, while the abstract studs reflect her earlier years in painting, where she experimented with texture and shape.
These were photographed on linen fabric, styled with dried florals to soften the scene and connect with nature. The close-up detail highlights the unique surface texture of each earring. Commercially, these images work for lookbooks, product pages, and social media posts where lifestyle storytelling matters.

Celestial Squares Necklace
The Celestial Squares Necklace is one of Ruth’s personal favourites. Designed for special occasions, it sits gracefully across the collarbone, catching the light with its hammered silver squares.
Photographing necklaces requires a balance between clarity and realism. A flat-lay composition was chosen to show how the necklace drapes naturally, while keeping the focus on the repeating square charms. This shot works as both a practical product listing and an elegant editorial image for marketing.

Star and Moon Initial Pendants
These pendants have a sentimental story behind them. Ruth first created one for herself with her daughter’s initial, and it became her everyday piece. The design includes a celestial symbol on one side, either a moon or a star, with an initial on the other.
I photographed them side by side to highlight the variation and to suggest collectability. Customers can see how they might wear or gift more than one. From a marketing perspective, these images are perfect for campaigns around personalisation, gifting, and family connections.

Star Necklaces
The star necklaces are created using silver clay, giving each pendant a unique character. Ruth designed them with comfort in mind, inspired by the idea of holding a small stone in your hand that you can’t let go of.
For these, I created a grouped collection shot. Showing multiple versions together encourages customers to explore the range and imagine choosing the one that best suits them. It also reinforces the handmade individuality of each piece.

Commercial Photography Insights
Accuracy and Trust
Jewellery photography must show products truthfully. Customers need to see the real colour, size, and texture, especially when shopping online. By carefully controlling light and reflections, I made sure each surface detail was represented accurately.
Storytelling Through Styling
Props such as bark, fabric, and dried petals were chosen to match Ruth’s values: natural, sustainable, and artisanal. These elements enhance the story without distracting from the product.
Versatility Across Platforms
The final set of images provides Ruth with a wide range of assets. Clean studio shots are ideal for product pages and e-commerce platforms. Lifestyle compositions fit perfectly for social media, catalogues, and advertising. Together, they create a consistent visual identity.
Emotional Connection
Beyond clarity, good product photography builds desire. By weaving in natural props and soft tones, the images connect emotionally, encouraging customers to see the jewellery not just as objects, but as part of a lifestyle or personal story.
This shoot with Ruth at Bluebell Lane Jewellery is a strong example of how collaboration and thoughtful photography can elevate a brand. The images capture not just the physical qualities of the jewellery, but also the values behind it, sustainability, artistry, and meaning.
Photographing jewellery is never just about making something look good on camera. It’s about presenting it in a way that feels authentic to the maker and inviting to the customer. Working alongside Ruth to create this set of images was inspiring, and I’m proud of how the final collection reflects both clarity and creativity.
