As a professional photographer with a passion for still life, my recent project, the “Christmas Eve Triptych,” is a heartfelt nod to the Dutch Masters. These artists are celebrated for their skilful and evocative still-life paintings. In this series, I have captured three distinctive photographs, each a meticulous celebration of local produce, artisan cheeses, and fine wines. The intent was to blend traditional aesthetics with a contemporary lens, creating images that speak both of heritage and modernity.
Photo 1: Norfolk Dapple and a Taste of Elegance
The first image in the series brings into focus the Norfolk Dapple cheese, a true gem from Ferndale Farm. This cheese, with its unique dappled rind and firm texture, is a testimony to the traditional cheese-making methods that prioritise quality and flavour. Accompanying the cheese is the Chateau Musar Hochar, a wine that complements the cheese’s delicate flavour notes with its rich profile.
The setting is carefully curated – an oak cheese board serves as the base, adorned with seeded sourdough and a crisp apple, adding layers of texture and freshness. The ensemble includes a cut crystal wine glass, a modern silver cheese knife, and a lit candle in a silver holder, all resting on a brown linen table runner. This composition not only highlights the cheese’s exquisite texture but also captures the warm, inviting ambience of a festive evening.
Photo 2: The Richness of Binham Blue
In the second photograph, the spotlight is on Mrs Temple’s Binham Blue cheese. This cheese, produced by Catherine Temple at Copy’s Green Farm, is a testament to the craft of blue cheese-making in Norfolk. Its creamy texture and subtly distributed flavour profile make it a standout addition to any cheese board.
The cheese is paired with Château Lauduc Bordeaux Rouge, a wine that echoes the depth and richness of the cheese. The composition includes a pear and Black Dog Deli Sourdough, all placed on a wooden cheese board that adds an earthy touch. The scene is set against a pale blue linen table runner and illuminated by a lit candle in a black metal holder. This image is a study in contrasts, where the deep hues of the cheese and wine create a visually striking and inviting tableau.
Photo 3: Baron Bigod – A Symphony of Flavours
The final photograph in the series features Baron Bigod cheese, produced by Fen Farm Dairy. This Brie-de-Meaux style cheese is a marvel of artisanal cheese-making, with its nutty, mushroomy rind and a silky, golden interior. The photograph captures the cheese’s luxurious texture and rich flavour profile, making it the centrepiece of the composition.
Accompanying the cheese is Château La Menotte, a wine that enhances the cheese’s creamy texture with its cherry, blackberry, and vanilla notes. The setting includes red grapes and Black Dog Deli 40% rye Sourdough on a slate cheese board, with a white linen table runner and a lit candle in a brass holder completing the scene. This photograph is a celebration of indulgence, where every element comes together to create a sumptuous visual feast.
The Artisanal Journey Behind the Scenes
The selection of cheeses for this project was meticulous. Each cheese, sourced from The Earsham Street Deli, represents the pinnacle of local cheese-making. The Norfolk Dapple, with its traditional methods and local milk, speaks of a commitment to preserving and promoting regional cheese varieties. The Baron Bigod and Mrs Temple’s Binham Blue each tell their own story of artisanal excellence, from the quality of the milk to the careful ageing processes.
The wines, selected with the expert guidance of Tom Mead from the Adnams Harleston store and the Galley in Woodbridge, were chosen for their ability to complement the flavours of the cheeses. Each wine, from the approachable Château Lauduc Bordeaux Rouge to the rich Château La Menotte and the unique Gaston Hochar Chateau Musar, adds its narrative to the photographs, enhancing the overall sensory experience.
The Bread that Ties it All Together
The bread for each photograph, sourced from the Black Dog Deli, was chosen for its exceptional quality and flavour. The Deli’s commitment to crafting the finest sourdough adds an authentic and rustic touch to the photographs, perfectly complementing the cheeses and wines.
A Tribute to Local Craftsmanship and Artistry
This Christmas Eve Triptych is a project close to my heart. It is more than a collection of photographs; it is a celebration of the artisanal craftsmanship and rich culinary heritage that characterises our local community. As a photographer, capturing the essence of these elements and weaving them into a narrative inspired by the Dutch Masters has been a deeply rewarding experience. These images are a tribute to the artisans, producers, and retailers who bring such richness and diversity to our tables and lives.
Through this series, I hope not only to showcase the art of still-life photography but also to honour the dedication and skill of those who produce and provide these exceptional local products. Their commitment to quality and craftsmanship is the true essence that brings these photographs to life.
