Janene and her team were entering the Photographic Stylist of the Year 2017 competition, run by the National Hairdressers’ Federation (NHF). Recognised throughout the industry, the competition invites entrants to submit a single image or collection of images suitable for the front cover of a magazine and Janene was keen to have me on board as the photographer.
Shooting models on location was a fantastic opportunity for me (despite the space being a little smaller than I’m used to!) Each stylist had a model to work with, which gave me plenty of opportunity to capture a variety of interesting hairstyles, although just 9 could be entered into the competition under various categories. Being surrounded by so many creative people was great fun and Janene’s professional, energetic nature and a keen eye for detail were inspiring to watch. Despite being so busy, Janene managed to keep things fun whilst making sure nothing was overlooked.
Janene clearly takes time to encourage and mentor her stylists, whether junior or senior, and her dynamic personality rubs off on all that work with her, resulting in a group of lively and fun individuals who are certainly kept busy in the salon!
Janene actively encourages her team to take part in a range of competitions and they were finalists in the ‘best new business’ category of the NHF Business Awards! As the competition is national, this was a fantastic achievement and the team was invited to the 75th Anniversary Awards Evening Dinner on Sunday 19th November, where the winners were announced.
As the rules of the NHF Photographic Stylist of the Year competition state that no photographs are to be shown until after the judging has taken place, I had the difficult task of keeping the images under wraps for a while. Needless to say, I’m excited to be able to share them with you now!
I would like to thank Janene and all the team at Heavenly Hair for inviting me to take part in a very interesting and enjoyable afternoon and I hope to be asked back soon!
